Three corrections officers suffered minor injuries Wednesday night during a riot at the state prison in Buckeye, Ariz. authorities said. About 80 inmates set two small fires and damaged property during the riot, which started about 6 p.m. and ended two hours later after officers deployed a chemical agent to control the outbreak, prison spokeswoman Cam Hunter said. The riot among medium- to high-security inmates was sparked by an altercation between two men in a mess hall, she said. Hunter did not know how the fight began, but said gang issues did not play a role. No inmates were injured and all were accounted for and locked down late Wednesday, Hunter said. Known as the Lewis complex, the Buckeye facility houses more than 4,000 inmates. |
