Putnam County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office is searching for a prisoner who escaped from Putnam County Jail about 5:15 a.m. Wednesday. Officials say Johnny Edward Staten Jr., 24, was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison for armed carjacking, and was awaiting transfer to the Department of Corrections. Deputies said Staten apparently got access to a white kitchen uniform, which allowed him to mix with the general jail population during the morning feeding time. They said he apparently climbed over the razor-wire fence, cutting himself. Deputies have found a bloody jumpsuit about one-half mile south of the jail. They continue to search using officers, bloodhound teams and a helicopter. Although authorities don't believe Staten is armed or especially dangerous, they beefed up security in the area -- especially at nearby elementary and middle schools. "Early this morning, before school ever started, we had deputies posted there just as a security precaution," Putnam County Sheriff's Office Capt. Rick Ryan said. "I really believe at this point his total focus is just to get out of the area." |
