A man who escaped from the Grant County Detention Center on Sunday is back in jail today, after spending three days in the hospital and nearly an hour on the loose. According to jail administrator Rocky Tafoya, inmate Mario Rodriguez allegedly swallowed a razor blade while in his jail cell last Thursday evening. He was taken to Gila Regional Medical Center, where he was admitted for treatment. While barefoot and wearing only boxer shorts, Rodriguez allegedly opened the door of his hospital room Sunday around 10:30 a.m. and ran past a jail officer who had been stationed outside his room. Hospital staff members and the officer attempted to apprehend Rodriguez but he ran into the hills, Tafoya said. The officer called for backup, and several law enforcement agencies, including the Grant County Sheriff's Department, Silver City Police Department, New Mexico State Police and the U.S. Border Patrol, participated in the search for Rodriguez. He was spotted on the roof of the Silver City Care Center by a facility resident, who notified authorities. Law enforcement officers apprehended Rodriguez at 11:30 a.m., about an hour after his escape, on the roof of the center, according to the Sheriff's Department. No one was injured in the incident, but Tafoya said Rodriguez suffered minor scratches and abrasions from running barefoot through the brush. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors checked him and sent him back to the detention center. The razor blade is still in Rodriguez's digestive tract, according to Tafoya. Rodriguez, who is being held at the detention center on an aggravated battery charge, tried to escape one time before and now faces two escape-from-jail charges, Tafoya said. He will be taken to the hospital for periodic checkups until the razor blade has passed through his system. If doctors decide surgery is necessary, Rodriguez will be readmitted to the hospital, according to Tafoya. |
