Dangerous Prisoner Escapes Custody in Calif.

A manhunt is still under way in the East Bay for a violent criminal who escaped custody Thursday morning at Oakland, California's Highland Hospital, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
"It is still ongoing, although not necessarily in the Oakland area," said sheriff's Lt. Dale Amaral.
The escaped prisoner, 32-year-old Dion Parrell, is believed to have contacts in San Lorenzo and Walnut Creek, and law enforcement officers are honing in on those areas, Amaral said.
Parrell was being held at Santa Rita Jail after his arrest in June on charges of carjacking, kidnapping, making terrorist threats and false imprisonment. He was given $600,000 bail and was awaiting trial.
Sheriff's deputies transported Parrell to Highland Hospital at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday for the purpose of having a wrist injury re-cast. Amaral said Parrell escaped from a hospital elevator.
"As soon as the elevator was opened, he fled," Amaral said.
Deputies immediately began searching the area surrounding the hospital, and located Parrell's red jail clothing and wrist cast a few blocks away, Amaral said.
Parrell himself, however, was nowhere to be found.
"We have unconfirmed reports that there might have been two females in a vehicle that picked him up," Amaral said, leading investigators to explore the possibility that the escape was planned in advance.
No one was injured in the course of the escape, he said.
It is fairly common for prisoners to be treated at Highland Hospital, according to hospital spokesman Mike Brown, who said Parrell's escape occurred near a clinic on the third floor.
Amaral said that local jails are not equipped to treat all of prisoners' ailments.
Prisoners have escaped from Highland Hospital in the past, but Amaral said hospital escapes are few and far between, calling Thursday's incident "a rarity."
Parrell is described as African-American, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. In addition to his prison garb, Amaral said Parrell was wearing a waist chain when he escaped.
