Prison Uprising in Rio de Janeiro Ends

Inmates at a Rio de Janeiro prison released nine officers Tuesday, ending a 30-hour uprising, officials said.
A group of inmates armed with makeshift knives and at least one pistol seized the officers Monday morning while they were serving breakfast and attempted to escape.
It was originally reported that the prisoners were holding seven hostages.
None the hostages were hurt, the Rio de Janeiro State Public Safety Department said. The agency had no information if any of the inmates were injured.
The department's press office said some 30 prisoners managed to run out the front gate at the Pedro Mello de Silva detention center, which is part of the Bangu prison complex; 12 were recaptured.
Inmates had negotiated with authorities, demanding better food, that several prisoners be transferred to other facilities, and that inmates not be punished for the uprising.
It was unclear which demands were met, though the authorities said transfer and better food demands were not.
Riots are an almost daily occurrence in Brazil's prisons, where conditions are poor and overcrowding is chronic.
Close to 600 inmates are held at the Pedro Mello de Silva center, 100 more than its capacity.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco lawyer that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
