A man who shot to death a five-year-old girl as she was curled up on her family's couch watching 'Sleeping Beauty' was executed last week. John Baltazar, 30, made no final statement before his execution by lethal injection. In an interview last week from death row, Baltazar said he didn't mean to shoot the young girl, Adriana Marines. Baltazar said he was drunk on Sept. 27, 1997, when he went to the girl's Corpus Christi house looking for the girl's uncle, who was dating his mother. Baltazar said he had heard that the uncle, Narciso Cuellar, had beaten his mother. Cuellar had been sleeping on the couch of the family's home but moved out a week earlier. According to family members, Baltazar kicked the door in at the home and began firing, wounding Adriana and her 10-year-old cousin, Vanessa Marines, as they nestled on the couch watching a movie. Adriana was wounded in the head; Vanessa was struck in the chest, but survived. Before the shootings, Baltazar had pleaded guilty in 1994 to a felony burglary charge and a felony unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charge. In 1992, he also had served time for two earlier burglary charges. Baltazar's execution was the second of the year. |
