A New York prisoner who escaped from a firehouse during an inmate work program last week killed himself nearby, authorities have said. Sean P. Sims, 28, cut his wrists with a knife he took from the firehouse's kitchen, said Ulster County Sheriff J. Richard Bockelmann. Sims, of Saugerties, walked away from a group of inmates stripping and painting floors at the building last Wednesday afternoon, police said. He likely killed himself soon afterward, authorities said. Forest rangers, dogs and helicopters searched the area about 55 miles southwest of Albany for two days. Searchers on snowshoes found Sims' body before noon last Friday in an area they were checking again, Bockelmann said. Sims, of Saugerties, was serving a one-year sentence for driving while intoxicated and was to be released March 4, the Daily Freeman of Kingston reported. He had a clean record while in the Ulster County Jail, Bockelmann said. The inmate work program is open to minimum-security inmates who have good behavior records and are not considered security risks. Disciplinary charges against the corrections officer overseeing the work detail were unlikely, Bockelmann said. The officer contacted deputies as soon as he realized Sims was gone, minutes after the inmate walked off, police said. |
