Family of Inmate Killed in Nassau Co. Jail Reaches Settlement

The family of a man beaten to death by officers at the Nassau County jail will receive $7.75 million as part of a settlement of a federal civil rights lawsuit.
Thomas Pizzuto, 38, was serving a 90-day sentence for traffic violations in 1999 when he was fatally beaten by officers after crying out for his methadone treatment. He died three days after suffering the beating; the medical examiner found that he had suffered a ruptured spleen.
Lawyers for both sides agreed to the settlement Monday night during a conference at Brooklyn federal court. The agreement still needs to be approved by the Nassau County legislature.
A lawyer for Pizzuto's relatives, Jeffrey Lisabeth, said $7.5 million of the settlement amount would go to the inmate's wife, Virginia, and his teenage son, Thomas Jr., who has Downs Syndrome. The remaining $250,000 will be split among Pizzuto's mother and brothers.
''As we were nearing trial, things began to get rehashed,'' Lisabeth said in an interview after the settlement was announced. ''The fact that (Virginia) won't have to take the stand is a good thing.''
Two former officers who admitted to fatally beating Pizzuto have both been sentenced to prison terms.
Pizzuto's death triggered state and federal investigations of the facility, officially called the Nassau County Correctional Center. A troubled medical infirmary at the jail was ordered closed because deficiencies cited during state inspections were not improved.
