A newly-opened department store had to be evacuated April 2 when a prison escapee and attempted kidnapping suspect ran inside the store and hid, police said. The escapee, identified as 27-year-old Billy Earl Ward Jr., was taken into custody about 6 p.m., about one hour after the standoff began inside a Kohl's Department Store. Ontario police officers had been looking for Ward since about 1 p.m., when a security guard at a cafe south of Kohl's reported a man trying to kidnap a woman who worked at the cafe. The woman turned out to be Ward's girlfriend, Ontario police Sgt. John Evans said. Ward had been reported missing earlier that morning after walking away from a state prison work crew in Adelanto and apparently came to Ontario in an attempt to contact his girlfriend, Evans said. Officers responding to the reported kidnapping set up surveillance north of the cafe, where the suspect was seen running away. About 4:15 p.m., police said, officers spotted Ward as he ran into the Kohl's store, which had just opened for business about two weeks ago. Officers pursued Ward into the store, where he made his way into the attic area of the store, Evans said. Store officials directed about 100 employees and customers to leave. Patrol cars surrounded the store while officers from Ontario and the state Department of Corrections waited outside. Inside, officers tried unsuccessfully to talk Ward into surrendering. At some point, Ward got in a space between the store's inner and outer walls, where a police dog located him, Evans said. Ontario firefighters cut into the wall, allowing officers to see Ward. When he refused to come out, a police dog was sent in. The dog, a 9-year-old German Shepherd named Natz, bit the suspect and pulled him out of the wall space, Evans said. His upper left arm bandaged, a handcuffed Ward was led out of the store by an Ontario officer about 6:15 p.m. It was unclear whether he would be returned to state prison or be booked into county jail after he was interviewed by detectives, Evans said. |
