A House budget panel voted unanimously April 2 to keep the women's prison in Goffstown, N.H., open. The panel -- a division of the House Finance Committee -- rejected Gov. Craig Benson's proposal to close the prison and move the inmates to the state's facility in Laconia, N.H. Goffstown Republican Robert Wheeler said the move would have put the inmates, the officers and the public at risk. He said the Laconia prison isn't equipped to handle the type of inmates in Goffstown. Benson proposed closing the Goffstown prison to save about $7 million. As many as 88 workers would have lost their jobs. Wheeler said the budget panel instead cut the corrections department budget's bottom line and will leave it to the commissioner to decide how to deal with less money. Wheeler said the department may be able to avoid layoffs through attrition. The panel's recommendation still must be voted on by the full budget committee when it puts together a budget for the House to consider later this month. |
