Ex-officer Seeks Access to Lindh
By Riverside Press Enterprise
Published: 04/14/2003

A retired Riverside, Calif. police officer wants to act as a spiritual adviser to John Walker Lindh, the so-called 'American Taliban.'
Bill Rhetts, 43, who has served as a chaplain since his 2000 retirement, reportedly has asked the warden at Victorville's federal prison for permission to begin correspondence with Lindh, who is incarcerated there.
While on the Riverside police force, Rhetts was accused of making a racist statement and of using excessive force. On his Web site, he outlined conservative religious beliefs, said that homosexuality is a sin and criticized liberals.
He is one of two Christians actively pursuing communication with Lindh, an American sentenced in October to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to supplying services to Afghanistan's Taliban government.
Lindh, 21, a Muslim, is expected to serve as much as 15 years in prison, Rhetts said. He added that Lindh will be a young man, in his 30s, when he exits prison.
'Only the Lord can convert him, but I'm willing to establish a relationship with Johnny. . . . I want to come to him on a man-to-man, sinner-to-sinner basis,' said Rhetts, who declined further comment recently.
The second man now seeking to speak with Lindh, New Mexico resident Glen Hanson, reportedly wrote a March 6 letter to prison officials asking whether he could start a correspondence with Lindh.
Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Dan Dunne would not discuss the requests to contact Lindh, but he did note that prison policy dictates that an inmate must have had a prior relationship with visitors.
Inmates attacked Lindh on March 3 in the 1,650-inmate Victorville federal prison, but he was injured only slightly. The FBI is investigating the attack.
