Former Conn. Corrections Officer Charged with Posing as Attorney

A retired correction officer has been arrested on charges he illegally practiced law and bilked his clients of more than $1,500 for legal services he was not qualified to provide.
Arthur J. Majors, 42, acted for about a month as a general practice lawyer in downtown Hartford. He had a secretary and hustled for clients in elevators and parking lots.
But lawyers down the hall became suspicious and checked the Connecticut Bar Association for Majors' name and didn't find it. They tipped off the state's attorney's office in January.
At his arraignment March 31, Majors' lawyer, Kweku J. Hanson of Hartford, said his client practiced law because he thought he might ''make a difference.''
A former client, Alicia Mullings, told The Hartford Courant that Majors didn't wear a fancy suit, smelled of alcohol and used a prepaid cellular telephone.
''Twice we went to eat; he would go to the bathroom when it was time to pay the bill,'' Mullings said. ''He dressed like something was wrong with him. His clothes were missing buttons.''
Two years ago, Majors ran unsuccessfully for the Hartford City Council.
Majors was charged with 13 counts of illegally practicing law and one count of third-degree larceny.
On March 31, he appeared in Hartford Superior Court and was jailed after failing to post $100,000 bail.
