New Alabama Prison Plan Unveiled
By WSFA
Published: 04/18/2003

Alabama's new prison commissioner wants the state's criminals housed in jails better equipped to handle the growing prison population. On Tuesday, Commissioner Donal Campbell and other prison officials unveiled a master plan to legislators addressing overcrowded and understaffed prisons.
The plan calls for spending almost $1 billion over the next five years to build six new prisons and expand or repair existing facilities. There would be a new 1,200 bed women's prison, a 2,000 bed reception center and medical center, two new maximum security facilities and two new medium to low security prisons.
Representative Steve McMillian says he has no idea where the legislature would find the money needed to accomplish those goals.
