Va. Inmate Dies at Regional Jail of Injuries from Fight

An inmate at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail died Thursday after being injured in a fight more than two weeks earlier, officials confirmed today.
Lynn Donnell Carter Jr., 27, died about 11 p.m. Thursday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Police did not know the cause of death.
Authorities are seeking a murder indictment against another inmate who was involved in the fight, said David Dempsey, a police spokesman.
Dempsey identified the suspect as a 33-year-old man who had been convicted of malicious wounding and violation of probation in Norfolk. Dempsey did not release a name because the man has not been charged.
If the incident is determined to be a murder, it will be the jail's first since opening in 1998, said Moses Pollard, an assistant superintendent at the jail.
Carter was thrown to the ground during a fight with the other inmate about food, police said.
An officer found Carter unconscious on his cell floor around about 12:40 a.m. on March 22, Pollard said. Carter had a pulse and was still breathing, and it appeared as though he had suffered a seizure, Pollard said.
The officer called a jail nurse, and about 1:20 a.m. Carter was taken to Maryview Medical Center and then to Norfolk General, Pollard said.
Carter shared the cell with two others. He had appeared unharmed during the last security check, about 12:10 a.m., Pollard said. Officers make rounds twice an hour.
Carter had been an inmate since December 2001, Pollard said. He was serving a sentence after being convicted on charges of robbery and assaulting a police officer in Hampton, he said.
Carter's last address was in the 100 block of LaSalle Ave. in Hampton.
This was the second death at the jail this year.
