Three hundred and fifty male inmates of Hiroshima Prison complained of diarrhea last week, apparently as a result of food poisoning, Hiroshima health officials said.
Hiroshima Prison officials told city health authorities the symptoms were minor and none of the inmates needed to be hospitalized.
According to Hiroshima Prison officials, 323 inmates complained of diarrhea on Wednesday, followed by another 27 last Thursday.
On the orders of city health authorities, Hiroshima Prison began ordering food for the inmates from outside suppliers from Saturday until health authorities determine the cause of the outbreak.
Food at Hiroshima Prison, located the city's Naka Ward, is prepared by inmates.
