One week after they escaped from the Essex County (N.J.) Jail, two inmates are back in police custody. On December 29, police say 32-year-old John Straile of Hillside and 23-year-old Brian Walsh of Linden climbed over a barbed wire fence while they were on work detail. Last Monday morning, police arrested Walsh at a laundromat in Jersey City. During the arrest, Walsh's mother says her son was subjected to police brutality. According to Theresa Haywood, officers handcuffed her son and dragged him along the street. She claims the dragging left a trail of Walsh's blood along the sidewalk. Haywood admits her son tried to flee, but she says the officers used excessive force, including hitting him with a gun. The Essex County sheriff, however, tells a different story. Sheriff Armando Fontoura says Walsh sustained a minor injury when police tackled him. The sheriff also says one of his officers injured his back trying to apprehend Walsh. In addition to the claim of police brutality, Walsh's mother says her son was let of the prison by a corrections officer. Essex County authorities are still investigating the incident. Walsh was sent to the Essex County Jail for robbery and violating his parole. Straile, the other inmate captured after escaping, is serving time after being charged with robbery and resisting arrest. |
