A Louisville convict is back behind bars charged with trying to murder the mother of his children after a dispute about child support payments. WAVE reported the suspect was already in jail on a work-release program when the attack occurred. Stephon Franklin was so far behind on child support payments that he was let out of jail during the day on a work-release program so he could earn money to pay down the debt. But police say he had payback of a different kind in mind when he opened fire on the mother of his children, shooting April Pendleton several times with a .22 caliber pistol as she sat in a car on April 14. Detective John Keeling seemed amazed the victim survived being shot at point blank range. 'He reaches in the back door with that gun, right over the headrest, and pulls off at least three rounds. If she'd have gotten hit in the head, she'd be dead.' Pendleton had filed a protective order against Franklin, but it expired in February. That's one of the reasons he was allowed out of jail on work release. Pendleton is expected to recover. 'He was being let out to work to go maintain a job to help support a family,' Keeling says. 'And he takes advantage of the court's leniency and then look what happens -- someone almost dies over it.' Police say Franklin has confessed to the shooting. Franklin has an extensive criminal background and was already due to appear in court in May to answer to two counts of flagrant non-support. Police believe he owes child support payments to at least two women, possibly more. |
