Ala. to Move 600 Male Inmates

Alabama plans to move nearly 600 male inmates to private prisons out of state to help relieve a backlog of state prisoners warehoused at county jails, the state told a circuit judge April 14.
In a plan filed with Montgomery County Circuit Judge William Shashy, Gov. Bob Riley and Attorney General Bill Pryor said the move is needed until a plan to speed up parole hearings can cut down the prison population.
'We view this as temporary,' said Troy King, Riley's legal adviser. 'It's not the best solution or a long-term solution. But it is an immediate solution. It is the only thing you can do immediately.'
King said the state needs to make room in the prisons to take state inmates from county jails. Even more inmates might be sent out of state later this year as needed to avoid a backlog, according to the plan filed with Shashy.
Plans for the transfers, revealed last week, will make at least 890 Alabama inmates who will be transferred out of state.
Counties sued the state over inmates languishing in county jails after being sentenced to state prisons. Shashy ordered the state to remove the backlog and in December imposed fines for inmates left beyond 30 days in county jails. As of April 11, 695 state prisoners had been in county jails for more than 30 days, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Riley Press Secretary David Azbell said the private prison for the male prisoners has not been selected.
