Iowa Department of Corrections officials say that a state penitentiary inmate died April 13 after an apparent suicide attempt. Spokesman Fred Scaletta says 33-year-old Warren James Mundy was pronounced dead just before noon at the Jones County Regional Center. Scaletta says Mundy had been placed in the prison infirmary the night before because of staff concerns about self-injurious behavior. He says staff entered Mundy's room on April 13 to prevent what appeared to be a suicide attempt and found him unresponsive. Scaletta says resuscitation attempts began immediately and continued during ambulance transport to the medical center. Mundy was serving a 25-year drug sentence from Linn County and was transferred to Anamosa last October after an escape from work release. Scaletta says an autopsy has been requested and the incident remains under investigation. |
