Man Sentenced to Life in Prison in S.C. Deputy's Death

The man convicted of killing an Horry County detention officer has been sentenced to life in prison after a jury was unable to reach a decision on a possible death sentence.
Circuit Judge John L. Breeden Jr. sentenced Boyd Matthew Meekins on April 17 for murder in the death of Lt. Randy Gerald.
Gerald was killed after he pulled up to the scene of a domestic dispute on Dec. 29, 2001.
Meekins' lawyer, William Diggs, said the case will be appealed.
Testimony indicated Meekins chased and shot at his ex-girlfriend, Cyrstal Huggins, before shooting Gerald after he happened on the scene and stopped to help.
Prosecutor Greg Hembree said he was frustrated with the sentence and the jury's 11-1 split on a sentence.
'The jury had to vote life or death,' Hembree said. 'It's frustrating when you have an 11-to-1 vote for the death penalty.'
A unanimous vote is necessary for a death sentence.
