More than 200 inmates at a state prison in Las Cruces became ill last week after eating a meal, and state agencies are investigating whether it was food poisoning. A total of 228 inmates out of 403 in a housing unit became sick -- experiencing stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhea -- after lunch on Tuesday, according to Tia Bland, a spokeswoman for the Corrections Department. They were treated with anti-diarrhea medication. 'Everybody is pretty much back to normal,' Bland said Thursday. The Health and Environment departments are investigating the incident at the state-owned Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility. No final determination has been made whether the inmates suffered from food poisoning, but Bland said it's suspected that the problem may be related to the handling and preparation of food. The inmates who became sick were served lunch -- a beef burrito from a dehydrated mix -- that was prepared at a kitchen in the housing unit. Inmates in another housing unit, which has its own kitchen, did not become ill although the same burrito mix was used for lunch. Each of the kitchens individually prepared and cooked the food, according to Bland. |
