U.S.-Led Administration in Iraq Releases 506 Prisoners

Published: 01/12/2004

The U.S.-led administration released 506 prisoners from Iraqi detention camps -- out of nearly 13,000 detainees.
They say it's a gesture aimed at creating more goodwill in Iraq -- along with more intelligence tips on the whereabouts of suspected insurgents.
American officials say most of those being set free are suspected low-level "associates" of insurgents, and none has been directly involved in attacking coalition forces.
Before they're freed, the prisoners have to sign a statement renouncing violence and have a tribal or community leader accept responsibility for their conduct.
Meantime, the administration will offer bounties for 30 more wanted Iraqis.
Iraq's civilian administrator says the U.S.-led coalition isn't freeing any Iraqis with "bloodstained hands."
Paul Bremer says people accused of torture and crimes against humanity will remain in custody.
Bremer said the families of those not released will be given more access to them.
