Sex Offender Gets 20 Years For Chopper Escape
By Associated Press
Published: 05/02/2003

A sex offender is getting 20 years in prison for trying to escape from a Florida treatment center in a helicopter.
Steven Whitsett is going to prison for armed escape and carrying a firearm as a felon. During the June 2000 escape attempt, a friend of Whitsett's flew a helicopter into a Martin County treatment center's recreation yard and picked him up. But the chopper crashed 100 yards outside the state facility.
Whitsett was convicted in 1994 of molesting a 15-year-old boy and completed his sentence in 1999. He was being held at the treatment center awaiting a civil trial, to determine whether it was safe to release him back into the public.
State officials have determined that were it not for the escape, Whitsett would have qualified for release. Pilot Clifford Burkhart was sentenced to four years in prison in February.
