Response unit called to jail

A disturbance caused by inmates at the Livingston County (Ill.) Jail last Tuesday resulted in the Livingston County Emergency Response Unit being called in to quell the situation.
Livingston County Sheriff Robert McCarty said the problems occurred on the third floor of the jail which houses both cell blocks and a dayroom where inmates can congregate and watch television.
"The prisoners began plugging toilets and then flushing them which caused flooding of the floor areas of the third floor. They then threw out trash and litter onto the cell block," said McCarty.
He said the errant behavior began at approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday and continued through the morning and early afternoon with the ERU being called in at 2 p.m.
"The ERU is comprised of officers from Dwight Police and the Livingston County Sheriff's Department. These officers have trained in the past for emergency responses at the jail and have also had to respond to actual situations at the jail in the past," said the sheriff.
McCarty said when the ERU team entered the third floor they handcuffed prisoners and the jail's correctional staff then conducted a shakedown of each cell on the floor.
"All non-essential items were removed from each cell. During the cell extraction process one inmate received a minor injury and was treated by the jail's medical staff," said McCarty.
McCarty said the ERU operation in the jail lasted approximately 45 minutes and the prisoners on the third floor were then all placed on a lockdown status.
The sheriff said an investigation into the disturbance is continuing as well as physical examination of the lower floors of the jail to determine any damage caused there by water going through walls and ceilings.
"The complaint from the prisoners was that they are being fed Rice Krispies cereal for breakfast. They are upset because they are not receiving other breakfast food items they have placed on a list. The cereal meets the nutritional guidelines we are given and also fits the economical guidelines," said the sheriff.
