South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds has shortened the sentences of 235 state penitentiary inmates who fought forest fires or performed other community service work last year. The governor's order, signed on Christmas Eve day, applies to male and female minimum security inmates who fought wildfires, cleaned up after storms, worked at the state fairgrounds or participated in other work programs. A total of 185 inmates received a 60-day sentence reduction for putting in more than 200 hours in community service. Fifty inmates received 30-day sentence reductions for working up to 200 hours. |
