| Former Officer Claims Gang Threats Pressured Him to Deliver Drugs to Jail |

A former Cameron County jail officer claims a member of the state's second largest prison gang, the Texas Syndicate, forced him to deliver drugs to inmates, according to court documents. The Texas Syndicate is labeled by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a security threat group. County jail officials say the violent crew has strong local ties. Robert Dalzell, a 23-year-old former jail officer, was fired in October after an inmate reported the activity. Dalzell told sheriff's investigators that a member of the gang threatened to hurt his wife and daughter if he did not smuggle marijuana into the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Facility in Olmito, where he worked. Dalzell pleaded guilty to the third-degree felony recently in state district court and is awaiting sentencing in February. Court documents indicate Dalzell concealed the clear plastic-wrapped package, which he described as 'the size of his hand,' in his boots and was able to walk it into the jail. The out-of-town inmate who reported Dalzell to investigators claims it was not the first time a jailer smuggled drugs into the maximum-security detention center. The inmate refused to identify the alleged gang member who demanded favors from the officer because he feared for his safety. The unidentified inmate reported the recipient would divide the marijuana brought in by the officer for distribution to other jail pods. According to Alex Garcia, the jail's suspended punishment officer, members of the Texas Syndicate and its allies comprise roughly 20 percent of the county inmate population at any given time and cause more problems than any other group in the county's jail system. 'I have had Texas Syndicate members tell me they were going to kill me,' said Garcia, who had been working in the county's jail system for nearly nine years when he was suspended in November on unrelated charges. Capt. Robert Lopez says he is aware of the gang's presence in the county jail system but says its influence over officer s is not common and does not affect overall security. |
