A man convicted of bludgeoning his grandparents to get money for cocaine was executed January 23 by injection. Robert Lookingbill, 37, maintained his innocence but said he was resigned to die. ''When it comes, you can't run from it and I'm not going to run,'' Lookingbill said in a final statement from the gurney. Lookingbill was convicted of beating his 70-year-old grandmother, Adeline Dannenberg, with a steel bar as she slept. She died 10 days later. The grandfather, 77-year-old Lorenz Dannenberg, was beaten in the living room and died after a year in a coma. Lookingbill was convicted of attempted murder in that attack. The Supreme Court denied two requests for stays. Lookingbill lived with his grandparents after serving a prison term for burglary. He was the third convicted killer put to death this year in Texas. |
