| International: Georgia Prison Riot Injures at Least 31 |

Prisoners rioted at a Georgian prison in Tbilisi during a cell check for weapons on January 25, injuring 10 police and officers and at least 21 inmates. The clashes erupted when prisoners resisted the search at the Tbilisi detention center, during which police confiscated two submachine guns, three grenades, knives, drugs and other banned items, said Rusudan Beridze, deputy head of the Georgian Security Council. One riot policeman was in serious condition, a prison spokeswoman said. Video footage, taken by the Justice Ministry and aired on Georgian television, showed inmates banging the bars of their cells and flames shooting out a prison window. Riot police cordoned off the building where the clashes took place, and Interior Ministry troops were deployed outside the center. |
