Like many people, these three begin their day by going through the paper and watching the morning news, but their reasons are different from most. These three broadcasters are part of a five-person team inside the Calcasieu Correctional Center called 'Cell 16.' David Hungerford is an 8-month Cell 16 veteran, 'We'll end up editing and reporting the paper and then we'll put it into the laptop computer which displays it for us and then we're able to read it out during the actual filming.' Each day, David Hungerford and the rest of the news team comb through the facts and put together a newscast that's broadcast to each living area throughout the jail. Hungerford says, 'What I like about this program is being able to benefit myself and benefit other inmates, serving them with information about what's going on in society.' Sgt. Johnny Hint on with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Department says, 'What they gain out of this is discipline, respect. Sgt. Hint on says Cell 16 does have some limitations and restrictions, 'I will review the articles and either say yes they can go with it or no they can't.' The inmates do have some freedom to exercise their creativity and improve the product. But they are limited by a staff that is constantly changing. Sgt. Hint on says, 'We had one guy that was excellent at this and he was shipped out about three weeks ago. Hungerford says, 'It's pretty frustrated if you've got somebody that doesn't get along well with other people, but besides that, once they get in the groove, we get going all over again. The show goes on.' The newscast covers local, national, facility and sports news, as well as weather and a spiritual note. For the safety of the inmate broadcasters, they do not mention the names of those arrested or cover court stories involving inmates currently housed at the Calcasieu Correctional Center. |
