The corrections officers union said inmates who belong to the Bloods street gang set a number of fires in a cell block at the Nassau County Jail January 18. Since that incident, they said some inmates have become unruly. For instance they have been accused of partaking in food fights, not returning peacefully to their cells from the yard and throwing urine on a corrections officer. One union member, Ken Banschback, said there may be some arrests made for the inmates' behavior. He also believes the sheriff does not do enough to punish inmates. Banschback added that violence in the jail has increased over the years. Nassau sheriff Ed Reilly said he is working with the state to create a disciplinary tier to separate inmates who are perceived as troublemakers from the general population of inmates. He said such a system could be a reality in the next few months. |
