Texas County Pays Inmate for Missing Coat

Cameron County taxpayers doled out $250 to replace a designer-label black leather jacket that was lost in the county's troubled jail system, Commissioners Court learned recently.
'How do we lose something like that? Where did it go? It just didn't vaporize,' Precinct 2 Commissioner John Wood said.
Wood's comment came following the Commissioners Court's regular meeting and its review of this and other expenditures. 'It is frustrating to have to pay for something like that,' he said.
Cameron County Sheriff Conrado Cantu, responsible for the jail, was not available for comment. The jail has been under scrutiny the last few months after money was reported missing, drug smuggling and a jail sex scandal.
The jacket belonged to a former inmate and the $250 that the court approved at County Auditor Mark Yates' recommendation will go to the inmate to replace the leather jacket.
'The jacket was logged in, but it turned up missing,' Yates said after the meeting, indicating that the situation occurred sometime late last year.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Edna Tamayo said that she felt bad for the loss of property in the county's jail system because of the county's 'incompetence -and I call it incompetence,' Tamayo said.
'Something has got to give,' Tamayo added. 'This shouldn't be happening, but we have to take responsibility for incompetence and that is why I did not object to it, but am I going to follow up on this? I am. Someone has to be held accountable.'

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best mason dunnam that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
