| Gang Fight Kills Three at El Salvador Prison |

A fight between rival gang members at a prison in central El Salvador killed two inmates and injured at least four others, authorities said Monday. A fight involving a large group of prisoners broke out shortly after midnight Monday at a prison in Cojutepeque, 35 kilometers (22 miles) east of San Salvador, the capital. Prison officers called the local police, who sent a special team to retake the prison and restore order. Authorities recovered the bodies of a pair of inmates who had been stabbed and beaten to death with homemade knives and other blunt objects, a spokesman for the Salvadoran prison system said in a phone interview. Three of the four injured inmates were taken to a prison infirmary to be treated for a variety of non-life threatening injuries, the spokesman said. |
