Texas Prison Escapee Convicted in Slaying

A fourth member of a gang of escaped inmates who shot a police officer to death during a 2000 robbery was convicted of capital murder Thursday.
Joseph Garcia was part of a group that fired at Officer Aubrey Hawkins when he responded to a robbery at a sporting goods store on Christmas Eve 2000. He was shot 11 times by at least five weapons and run over twice.
The punishment phase of the trial starts Monday. Garcia faces life in prison or lethal injection.
Under Texas law, prosecutors do not have to show Garcia fired a fatal shot to prove capital murder.
Garcia was serving a 50-year murder sentence when he and six other inmates escaped from a maximum-security prison near San Antonio. The gang was captured a month later in Colorado after a nationwide manhunt.
Three other men - ringleader George Rivas, Donald Newbury and Michael Rodriguez - have been convicted and sentenced to death for the slaying. Two others still face trial, while the sixth escapee, Larry Harper, committed suicide as law enforcement officers were closing in on the gang.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best gerald villarrial that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
