An inmate at Graterford state prison was officially diagnosed with hepatitis A, according to prison spokesman Jerry Galinski. The inmate has been isolated and is receiving medical treatment, Galinski said. Hepatitis A is a contagious viral disease that attacks the liver and includes symptoms such as abdominal and gastric discomfort and jaundice, according to Mike Baysinger, who heads the county Health Department's communicable disease division. The virus can be spread through direct contact or through fecal-contaminated food or water, said Baysinger. The stricken inmate worked in the prison's culinary department but had no contact with the food, Galinski said. County and prison health workers will work together to identify those who should receive the medication and to help distribute it, said Baysinger. No other inmate has been stricken, according to Galinski. However, as a precautionary measure, some 90 to 100 inmates at the 3,180-inmate facility in Skippack will receive preventive medication, said Baysinger. |
