The Mental Health Department told a judge recently it has cut a list of mentally ill inmates awaiting treatment in jails by about one-third. The state had about 70 inmates in jail in September waiting on services for a pre-trial program that determines whether the defendants are competent to stand trial. DMH attorney Mark Binkley told the judge January 29 in Columbia that the waiting list had been cut to about 41 people. He says the department hopes to continue that progress and eliminate the list entirely by the summer. Circuit Judge Henry Floyd found the department and its director in contempt last August for not doing more to treat eight mentally ill inmates in Richland County. Judge Floyd dismissed the contempt charge against DMH in Richland County on Wednesday but says he will continue to monitor the department's program to address the backlog. |
