Prison Employees Protest Facility Closure at State Capitol

Employees and supporters of a Stockton, California women's prison demonstrated at the State Capitol January 27, hoping to persuade the governor not to close the facility.
The Department of Corrections has recommended that Governor Gray Davis move NCWF's prisoners to other state prisons and convert the facility to house male offenders. If that comes to pass, more than 250 employees at the facility face losing their jobs as early as March 1.
Proponents of the plan say the move will save money, but the protestors disagree. 'I think the governor needs to ask the question how much is this going to cost,' said retired warden and protestor Carol Pinkins. 'And when they give him a cost he needs to hold them to the cost because I guarantee you they will come back and ask for additional funds to retrofit that institution.'
Rosalie Marie, who works at the Stockton site, said the cost is personal. 'They're saying they're going to put us in other places and we have no idea where. All of have lives here. We own our homes, people have kids.'
Relatives of inmates are not happy either. 'This institution has given my daughter a lot,' believes Ralphie Brown, whose daughter is at NCWF.
'They have done very well in [helping her succeed] in her education, to put her back in society and mend with her family.'
NCWF is presently a medium security prison for up to 800 women. For the 2002-2003 year it has an operating budget of $20.2 million.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco attorney that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
