A new study says Mississippi could save $5.4 million a year if 500 people a year successfully complete drug court programs instead of going to prison. State auditor Phil Bryant, in releasing the study, says this is not soft on crime. This is a program that works. He was flanked by a diverse group of legislators and judges. 'The numbers do not lie. It is obvious that a successful drug court system expanded statewide for the state of Mississippi will save taxpayers' dollars,' Bryant said. 'We could take some of that money we would be putting in corrections and put it in drug courts and drug courts work much better than going to corrections,' said Representative Alyce Clark of Jackson. Some circuit, county and youth court judges are already running drug court programs on their own and covering expenses with grant money. Participants go through drug treatment and other programs hoping to reduce penalties they might face for criminal charges. |
