The Anchorage Jail would be merged with another facility and an internal auditor would be added to the state Department of Corrections under a reorganization ordered January 27 by Gov. Frank Murkowski. Murkowski issued an executive order that would merge the Anchorage Jail with the Cook Inlet Pre-Trial Facility and also reduce the number of assistant superintendents at some facilities. Facilities with fewer than 300 inmates would no longer have an assistant superintendent, under the executive order. The inmate health care unit would also be moved to the Division of Administrative Services under the order in an effort to contain costs, Murkowski said in a press statement. The reorganization would allow the department to reduce costs and 'refocus its limited resources on its public safety mission,' Murkowski said. |
