As the snow piles up around Spokane, Wash. inmates from Geiger Corrections Center are hitting the streets - clearing off snow for the elderly and disabled. However, last Wednesday an inmate, David Camacho, walked away from his work crew, and some are wondering about the safety of the program. Inmate work crews handle jobs for the county all year round, including the snow removal program. Inmates work 10 hours a day, shoveling driveways around the county. But, even Geiger's director says the temptation for some inmates is too great, and once a year or so an inmate walks away from work crew. "This is a minimum security inmate, he is screened for us to have confidence he isn't going to go out there and commit a crime, or we would not put him in the program," said Mike Pannek, Director of Geiger Corrections. Geiger says of more than 5000 inmates booked last year, only one walked away from work crew. |
