Inmates in Maryland and detainees in Baltimore City intake facilities suffer from high rates of HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections, according to a report released Tuesday. The report prepared by the AIDS Administration of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services found that 26.4 percent of inmates and 31.1 percent of detainees were infected with hepatitis C. It was the most common illness found in the inmates and detainees, suggesting an immediate need to develop policies to prevent and control hepatitis C transmission, according to the AIDS Administration. The report also found newly incarcerated females had higher rates of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C than newly incarcerated males, and that 71 percent of inmates and more than half of all detainees were susceptible to hepatitis B infection. The results of the report will help health officials plan health services for detainees and prisoners. |
