Alabama has suspended the use of prison inmates for labor along highways after three prisoners died in accidents.
One prisoner, 33-year old Dairron Clark of Dothan, was struck and killed April 11 by a van on Interstate 10 in Mobile. A Montgomery inmate was killed and three others were injured two weeks later when the driver of a small car slammed into a concrete barrier and struck the group. A third inmate was killed when he fell off a sanitation truck.
Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett says the suspension began May 1 and ends Friday. Corbett said the department is evaluating the safety standards of local governments and agencies that use inmate workers.
