A former prison officer at the Belmont Correctional Institution pleaded innocent to charges that he tampered with records on a day an inmate was found dead in his cell. Sean R. Graham, 37, was released on his own recognizance following his arraignment May 15 in Belmont County Common Pleas Court. The allegations against Graham are that he filled out a logbook at the prison on Feb. 22 that stated officers made their rounds in the cellblock at the required intervals, according to court records. However, an investigation revealed the officers had not made the rounds as recorded in the logbook. Donald R. Shirley, 31, of Summit County, was found hanging in his cell around 2 p.m. that day after what was determined by investigators to be a suicide. Two other corrections officers - Scott Bornyk and James Reed Jr. - are facing misdemeanor charges of dereliction of duties in Belmont County Western Division Court. Graham and Reed have been relieved of their duties at the prison, according to prison spokesman Jay Forshey. Bornyk is currently on leave from the prison while he is serving in the U.S. military. |
