Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty in Prison Officer's Death

Prosecutors are pushing for the death penalty for a Colorado prisoner who killed an officer.
Prosecutors said during a sentencing hearing Monday that Edward Montour Jr., planned the murder of officer Eric Autobee.
More testimony was expected Tuesday in Douglas County District Court.
Authorities said Montour struck Autobee twice on the head with a 9-pound, 4-foot-long soup ladle in the kitchen of the Limon Correctional Facility.
Montour pleaded guilty in January to first-degree murder.
''He killed without compassion, without conscience and without remorse,'' said Chief Deputy District Attorney John Topolinicki.
Montour admitted killing Autobee because he wanted to be transferred to another prison, saying he had been labeled a ''snitch'' and his life was in danger at Limon.
He was serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for the 1997 beating death of his 11-week-old daughter in Colorado Springs.
Montour, acting as his own lawyer, told District Judge Paul King that he didn't plan to call any witnesses, offer any evidence or present any mitigating information on his background or character. King will decide the sentence.
Members of Autobee's family packed the courtroom, many crying at times during the hearing.
The 23-year-old Autobee, who had worked for the Department of Corrections for 18 months, was the first corrections officer to be killed by an inmate since 1929.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco attorney that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
