Friends, Family Of Victims Remember Lucasville Uprising

Published: 06/04/2003

On the 10th anniversary of a high-profile prison uprising, family and friends of victims gathered for an emotional memorial service April 11.
A riot broke out at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, in Scioto County, about 90 miles east of Cincinnati, on Easter Sunday 1993.
An officer, Bob Vallandingham, and nine inmates died in the subsequent 11-day struggle, which remains the longest prison siege in U.S. history. This year, many of those close to the victims, as well as some of the hostages who survived the ordeal, attended the service at a prison on Orient, Ohio.
'It's good that they are remembering Bob,' Vallandingham's widow, Peggy Vallandingham, said. 'I want the community, and everybody, to remember.' Some in attendance said that the sun shining over the ceremony was Bob Vallandingham's way of making his presence known.
'I know he's here,' Peggy Vallandingham said.
His former friend and co-worker, Lt. Darrold Clark, who also was taken hostage in the uprising and is now a corrections officer, was noticeably emotional while delivering a speech from behind a podium.
'That was a day (when) I witnessed officers and staff members become heroes,' Clark said. 'On this day, please remember the other hostages and their families for all they've had to endure. And for Bobby, who paid the ultimate price, along with his family, who had to suffer such a terrible loss.'
At exactly 3 p.m. Friday, attendees observed a moment of silence, which was followed by a gun salute from uniformed officers, WLWT reported.
Ohio has had other prison uprisings since Lucasville, but none has been as serious.
