A former prison officer who admitted smuggling drugs and other contraband to an inmate was sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation. Paul Mayes, 47, of Syracuse, apologized to his family and co-workers at his sentencing April 7. Onondaga County Judge Anthony Aloi said Mayes had 'smeared the reputation' of his fellow officers and hurt efforts to rehabilitate inmates. Mayes pleaded guilty in January to one felony count of third-degree bribe receiving, for accepting bribes three times last October. He will serve the jail term at Madison County Jail in Wampsville, 20 miles east of Syracuse. Mayes admitted smuggling marijuana, tobacco and alcohol to an inmate in the Onondaga County Correctional Facility, where he had worked for more than 20 years. He was fired after the conviction. |
