Fla. Jail Employee Accused of Smuggling Candy

A Manatee County Jail employee is now inside a cell after he was arrested for allegedly smuggling in Easter candy, Mountain Dew and cigarettes to sell to an inmate.
Jesse Penaloza, 37, was charged April 8 with bringing contraband to a correctional facility and unlawful compensation for official behavior.
He was booked into the jail and remained there on a $10,000 bail the following day. The public defender's office said Wednesday the arrest was too recent to know if they would represent Penaloza.
Penaloza, who had worked on the jail's farm since 1996, was fired after his arrest. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation last week after receiving a tip about Penaloza, spokesman Dave Bristow said.
Penaloza twice was seen accepting $100 from an inmate's family member in exchange for soda, tobacco, rolling papers, and Rockin' Rabbit candy, Bristow said.
The jail is a no-smoking facility but does sell soda and candy at its commissary. 'Maybe they don't have Mountain Dew or Easter candy there,' Bristow said. 'I don't know what the deal is.'
