Inmate Sues After Finding Fly In His Mashed Potatoes

A jail inmate awaiting trial on rape charges has filed a claim seeking $20,000 from San Diego County because he discovered a dead fly in his mashed potatoes.
Kevin Williams, 41, said he has suffered 'mental stress and anguish' after discovering the fly in a meal he was served on May 2 at the George F. Bailey Detention Facility. In his claim, filed last week, Williams said he cannot eat properly since the incident and is losing weight.
Williams wrote that a $20,000 award would be 'extremely fair.' If he had taken the case directly to the media, he said, the county could lose 'a great deal more both financially and in bad publicity.'
The county has not responded to his claim. If it is denied, Williams would be clear to file a lawsuit.
Williams is accused of breaking into a San Diego home last year and raping a 16-year-old girl who was asleep on a couch.
Prosecutors say DNA evidence linked Williams to the crime. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 112 years to life in prison.
