Seven Virginia inmates injured in lightning strike

Lightning seriously injured at least seven inmates at the Dillwyn, Va., Correctional Center on Thursday, state officials said.

The inmates were in an open expanse about the size of a football field between buildings at the low-security, dormitory-style prison in central Virginia when they were struck around 4:10 p.m., Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor said.

'All are being transported away from the facility for medical care,' Traylor said, but he did not know the extent of their injuries or where they had been taken.

The inmates' identities also were withheld pending notification of relatives.

'They were where they were supposed to be. It was raining and they'd just come off their afternoon count ... and were getting ready to go to chow at 4:30,' Traylor said.
