| NYC Officer Investigated for Sex with Inmates' Girlfriends |

A Rikers Island officer is being investigated for allegedly having sex with inmates' girlfriends in exchange for letting them smuggle drugs into the jail, the Daily News has learned. Correction Officer Keith McFarlane was placed on modified duty at the request of the city's inspector general amid an ongoing Department of Investigation probe of narcotics trafficking at the jail, law enforcement sources said yesterday. McFarlane, 46, a 12-year Correction Department veteran, had his weapons taken away and was moved from the complex's Anna Kross Center recently. At least one woman is cooperating with the probe, saying McFarlane let her bring drugs into the visitors room after she had sex with him, a source close to the case said. The burly, Jamaican-born McFarlane was a visiting room strip search officer responsible for making sure inmates do not bring contraband back into the Anna Kross Center, one of 10 maximum-security jails on Rikers Island. 'There was a tip from an inmate's girlfriend that led to a bigger investigation,' the source said. The Bronx district attorney's office also is investigating the allegations against McFarlane and other correction officers who may be profiting from the drug trade inside Rikers Island, law enforcement sources said. 'There is a lot of stuff going on over there that involves correction officers,' said another source close to the case. 'Having sex with guys' girlfriends is just one piece of the pie.' Last week, a Correction Department spokesman declined to comment on the case, other than to confirm that McFarlane had been placed on modified duty. A DOI spokeswoman refused comment. McFarlane did not return calls to his Bronx home. |
