Gov. Sonny Perdue is recommending that the Legislature, which convenes Monday, make substantial changes in the state's $16 billion budget for the current 2004 fiscal year that runs through June 30. Some of the highlights of Perdue's mid-year budget proposal: Prisons, Juvenile Justice, Public Safety: $1.2 million cut in counseling programs by eliminating 37 middle-management positions. $4.1 million savings by furloughing non-security staff one day every other month. $3.1 million cut in payments to private prisons. $8.9 million increase in subsidies to counties for housing inmates in their jails. $5 million saved by reducing the capacity of juvenile facilities. $574,950 saved by eliminating midnight shifts a half of the State Patrol posts. $1.25 million cut by leaving positions vacant and reorganizing the structure in the Department of Public Safety. |
